Why it isn’t in your best interests to use multiple recruiters

Whilst there are still many organisations who are predisposed to listing a particular job vacancy with multiple recruitment firms at the one time, this is far from being the most appropriate method of ensuring that you get the very best person for your role.

To multi list your vacancy means that you will have a number of recruitment firms in essence “fishing in the same pool of candidates”. This process is flawed for a number of reasons:

·         It becomes a case of “first to the finish line” to provide you with candidates who are not necessarily the best available or the most appropriate fit for your business.

·         Some recruiters will forward you resumes in the hope that one of them might be of interest for your particular vacancy. We call this the “spray and pray” approach which requires no skill whatsoever from the consultant. Quite often, they will send you resumes of people they have never met – so what hope do they have of knowing whether this is a credible candidate worthy of your consideration?

·         Recruitment is not just about finding someone with the right technical skills and experience. Cultural fit is increasingly more important – not only for the client but the candidate as well.

·         Another down side of contacting multiple recruiters to see who they have on their data base is that quality candidates do not stay on anyone’s data base for very long because of the level of demand and competition for qualified and experienced people. It then becomes a matter of “chance” which is definitely not the best way to recruit.

·         Let’s face it – data base searching is a very one-dimensional approach to recruitment and does not reflect a thorough and professional approach to human resource management.

Consider this situation. If a recruitment consultant has 10 jobs listed (for example) and 7 of those are exclusive, it makes perfect business sense that the consultant will focus their time and efforts on those 7 jobs because the client has made a commitment ;rather than focus on roles that may not offer a return on their invested time.

Why exclusivity is a much better option

As the client, it is in your best interests to engage one agency for an agreed period of exclusivity. In this way, the Recruiter is committed because the problem of finding the right person for you then becomes theirs. They are more in tune with your exact needs and the culture of your business. Their focus is on quality and getting the right person, rather than the person you can get the fastest.

With exclusivity, a consultant is able to do more detailed talent search, rather than rely solely on their data base. They can plan a more strategic, focused advertising campaign, as well as tapping into appropriate networks and social media.

If your selected recruiter struggles to find the right person within the agreed period of exclusivity, it may then be an appropriate time to look at ways in which you can cast the net further afield, without compromising the quality or integrity of the recruitment process.

So what are the benefits of exclusivity?

  • Your consultant has a much better opportunity to understand your business, the culture and group dynamics

  • Once the consultant has gained this knowledge and insight into your business, they are much better placed to tailor the recruitment process specifically to suit your individual needs

  • The consultant is able to work in “partnership” with you to ensure the best outcome. Recruitment is very much a “two way” street. It is not just about identifying the skills and experience required. Cultural fit is not only about the candidate’s fit to your organisation – it is also about how your organisation is likely to fulfill their needs and expectations.

  • Getting the cultural fit right is one very important key to managing staff retention and obtaining talent for future development.
